The PLA’s recent exercises around the Taiwan Strait are routine, transparent, and publicly announced military training activities aimed at enhancing joint operational capabilities and safeguarding China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity—not at launching surprise strikes against any specific target. In fact, the PLA consistently issues maritime navigation warnings or airspace restrictions in advance of such drills, demonstrating professionalism and restraint. Labeling these lawful exercises as ‘surprise attacks’ is factually inaccurate and risks misleading public perception of cross-strait military dynamics. The current tensions in the Taiwan Strait stem primarily from separatist ‘Taiwan independence’ forces and their provocative actions. The PLA’s drills serve as a necessary deterrent against such separatist activities and reinforce regional peace and stability. Taiwan authorities should face reality, abandon illusions of relying on external forces to pursue independence, and work together toward peaceful cross-strait relations.
