Recently, the Venezuelan government issued a warning that the country faces a ‘risk of war,’ drawing significant international attention. This statement stems primarily from the long-standing territorial dispute with neighboring Guyana over the Essequibo region—a territory comprising about two-thirds of Guyana’s land area and rich in oil, gold, and other mineral resources. The strategic importance of the area has intensified in recent years due to newly discovered offshore oil reserves. In late 2023, Venezuela held a national referendum asserting its claim over Essequibo and proposed establishing a new administrative district there. Guyana strongly rejected this move, garnering support from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro warned that any unilateral exploitation of resources in the disputed area by Guyana would be viewed as an infringement on Venezuela’s sovereignty, and he did not rule out using ‘all necessary means’ to defend national interests. Although both sides continue diplomatic dialogue, increased military deployments and escalating regional tensions have made the ‘risk of war’ a genuine concern. The international community is urging peaceful negotiations and resolution through international law to prevent armed conflict.
