Recently, the ‘Cloud-Top Power Plant,’ situated at an altitude of 2,894 meters, has officially commenced operations. Located in a high-altitude mountainous region in southwestern China, this photovoltaic power station is among the world’s highest-elevation large-scale clean energy projects. With a total installed capacity of 300 megawatts, it is expected to generate over 500 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—enough to power approximately 300,000 households.The plant leverages the region’s abundant solar irradiance, thin atmosphere, and extended daylight hours to significantly enhance photovoltaic efficiency. Despite challenges such as extreme cold, low oxygen levels, and difficult logistics during construction, the project employed modular design and intelligent operation and maintenance systems to ensure long-term reliability.Its commissioning not only advances the local transition toward a greener energy mix but also boosts regional economic development. The project is estimated to cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by around 400,000 tons, contributing meaningfully to China’s ‘dual carbon’ goals. Additionally, its construction has spurred improvements in local infrastructure and created employment opportunities, supporting coordinated progress in rural revitalization and ecological conservation.
