Recently, the world’s first 30-megawatt-class pure hydrogen gas turbine has successfully entered commercial operation, marking a significant breakthrough in clean energy technology. Developed by an international energy company, the turbine runs entirely on 100% hydrogen fuel, producing zero carbon dioxide emissions—only water vapor—making it a key asset for achieving ‘zero-carbon’ power generation.Compared to conventional natural gas turbines, burning pure hydrogen presents technical challenges such as high flame speed, risk of flashback, and difficulty in controlling nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The development team overcame these hurdles by optimizing the combustor design, introducing advanced low-NOx combustion technologies, and enhancing high-temperature material performance. This newly commissioned unit can supply clean electricity to approximately 20,000 households, reducing CO₂ emissions by about 100,000 tons annually.The project not only demonstrates the feasibility of large-scale hydrogen-based power generation but also lays the groundwork for future power systems centered on renewable energy and green hydrogen. As the cost of green hydrogen production continues to decline and supporting infrastructure expands, pure hydrogen gas turbines are expected to play a vital role in peaking power, industrial energy supply, and off-grid applications, accelerating the global energy transition.
