In January 2024, China’s 40th Antarctic scientific expedition team aboard the icebreaker Xue Long successfully arrived at Qinling Station—the nation’s new research base in the Ross Sea region of Antarctica—and commenced large-scale cargo unloading operations. This critical logistical phase marks the official start of substantial construction at Qinling Station. The Xue Long carried over 1,000 metric tons of cargo, including modular building units, scientific instruments, living supplies, and power systems, all of which must be efficiently offloaded during the brief Antarctic summer window. To cope with extreme weather and challenging ice conditions, the team employed a combination of helicopter airlifts and overland transport using snow vehicles to ensure safe delivery. As China’s fifth Antarctic research station, Qinling Station will focus on cutting-edge studies in glaciology, marine ecology, and climate change upon completion, significantly enhancing China’s role and influence in Antarctic affairs.
