Recently, silver prices have surged dramatically due to multiple factors—including financial speculation, geopolitical risks, and heightened industrial demand expectations—drawing significant market attention. As a critical raw material in the photovoltaic (PV) industry, silver is primarily used in conductive silver paste for solar cells. Sharp price volatility directly increases manufacturing costs for PV modules, placing immense pressure on downstream solar manufacturers already operating on thin margins or even at a loss.In response to this runaway silver rally, downstream manufacturers are actively adopting mitigation strategies. On one front, companies are accelerating technological innovations to reduce silver consumption per module—such as multi-busbar (MBB), busbar-free (e.g., SmartWire or SWCT), or copper plating technologies. On another, some firms are using financial instruments like long-term supply contracts and hedging to manage raw material price risks. Additionally, the industry is exploring alternative materials like silver-coated copper or silver alloys to lessen reliance on pure silver.However, these alternatives cannot fully offset cost increases in the short term, especially as high-efficiency cell technologies have yet to achieve mass production. Therefore, PV manufacturers must strike a balance between cost control, technological innovation, and supply chain management, while also urging upstream suppliers to enhance material availability and price stability to ensure the healthy and sustainable development of the entire solar value chain.
