To better meet residents’ nighttime travel needs and enhance public transportation services, Beijing’s Municipal Commission of Transport recently announced that starting July 2024, eight major subway lines—including Lines 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, and 14—will extend their operating hours on weekdays and weekends. On weekdays, the last trains will run as late as 1:00 AM the following day, while weekend and holiday schedules will be flexibly adjusted based on passenger volume. These extended services cover central urban areas and key transport hubs, commercial districts, and residential zones such as Xidan, Guomao, Zhongguancun, and Beijing South Railway Station, benefiting millions of commuters and nighttime travelers. Authorities stated that this initiative aims to optimize the city’s nighttime transportation network, support the growth of the ‘nighttime economy,’ and alleviate challenges like late-night taxi shortages and long ride-hailing wait times. Going forward, Beijing will dynamically evaluate the program’s effectiveness and public feedback to determine whether to expand the number of extended lines or further lengthen service hours.
