A recent survey by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) reveals that more than 60% of Japanese companies operating in China are concerned about the ongoing tensions in Sino-Japanese relations, fearing adverse impacts on their business operations. The survey, which covered sectors including manufacturing, retail, and services, identified geopolitical risks, shifting public sentiment, and policy uncertainty as the top three concerns. Some companies reported that rising friction between China and Japan over historical and territorial issues has complicated Chinese consumers’ attitudes toward Japanese brands, occasionally triggering boycotts. Bilateral cooperation in supply chains and technological exchanges has also been somewhat disrupted. Nevertheless, nearly half of the respondents indicated they have no plans to reduce investment in China in the short term, citing the country’s vast consumer market, well-developed industrial chain, and relatively stable business environment.Experts note that China and Japan enjoy highly complementary economic ties. While political tensions may cause short-term disruptions, long-term collaboration opportunities remain strong—particularly in emerging fields such as green energy and the digital economy. Businesses are urging both governments to enhance dialogue and create a more stable external environment for private-sector cooperation.
