Recently, India surpassed Germany to become the world’s fourth-largest economy—a milestone that has drawn significant attention. But how substantial is this ‘fourth-place’ ranking? In nominal GDP terms, India indeed rose to fourth place around 2023; however, when measured by purchasing power parity (PPP), it has ranked among the top three for years. True economic strength isn’t just about aggregate size—it also hinges on per capita income and structural quality. Currently, India’s per capita GDP remains below $2,500, far under the global average and significantly lagging behind other major economies. Moreover, its economy is still dominated by services, with a relatively weak manufacturing base, and public services such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare require substantial improvement. Despite its large demographic dividend, rapidly growing digital economy, and improving business environment, India must still address deep-rooted challenges like income inequality, insufficient job creation, and institutional inefficiencies to translate its ‘fourth-largest economy’ status into high-quality, sustainable development. Thus, this ranking primarily reflects scale—not comprehensive global leadership.
