Recently, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) announced it will intensively address the issue of ‘involutionary competition’ within the civil aviation industry. ‘Involutionary competition’ refers to a situation where companies excessively compete for limited resources or market share by continuously increasing inputs without generating proportional overall gains—ultimately leading to rising costs, shrinking profits, and declining service quality. In aviation, this often manifests as airlines slashing fares unrealistically, blindly expanding capacity, and duplicating popular routes, which not only undermines their own sustainability but also disrupts market order.The CAAC clarified that curbing such involutionary practices does not mean restricting healthy market competition. Instead, it aims to shift the industry’s focus from quantitative expansion to qualitative improvement, encouraging airlines to compete through service optimization, operational efficiency, and differentiated strategies. Going forward, regulators will strengthen route approval processes, rationally manage capacity deployment, incentivize airlines to develop routes to less-served regions like central and western China and smaller cities, and support high-quality development initiatives such as green aviation and smart airport technologies.This initiative seeks to foster a healthier, more orderly, and efficient aviation market ecosystem, ensuring long-term industry stability while delivering safer, more convenient, and higher-quality air travel experiences for passengers.
