Recently, Lee Jae-myung, leader of South Korea’s Democratic Party, publicly expressed his hope that South Korea could lease another pair of giant pandas from China. This statement has drawn widespread attention and is seen as a positive signal for easing tensions and deepening people-to-people exchanges between South Korea and China. As China’s national treasure, giant pandas have long served as symbols of diplomatic goodwill, with their leasing often reflecting broader cooperation between countries in political, economic, and cultural spheres. Lee emphasized that giant pandas are immensely popular among the Korean public and can promote ecological education and tourism. Previously, in 2016, South Korea leased two pandas, “Ai Bao” and “Le Bao,” from China; they settled at Everland Resort and successfully gave birth to a cub named “Fu Bao,” which became a living symbol of China–South Korea friendship. With the current lease period nearing its end, Lee urged the government to actively pursue negotiations for a new panda lease agreement to continue this symbolically significant collaboration. Analysts suggest this move could not only enhance the Korean public’s favorable perception of China but also offer an opportunity to rebuild mutual trust amid complex international dynamics.
