Since 1991, China’s foreign minister has made Africa the destination of their first overseas visit each New Year—a tradition that has continued for 36 years and stands as a powerful symbol of Sino-African friendship. In January 2024, Foreign Minister Wang Yi once again embarked on a multi-country tour of Africa, reaffirming China’s steadfast support and commitment to cooperation with the continent. Wang emphasized that regardless of shifting global dynamics, China consistently prioritizes Africa in its foreign policy, adhering to the principles of sincerity, real results, amity, and good faith, as well as pursuing the right approach to justice and shared interests, to build a high-level China-Africa community with a shared future.This enduring practice reflects China’s respect for African sovereignty and development paths, while highlighting deep mutual trust across political, economic, security, and cultural domains. In recent years, mechanisms like the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the alignment of the Belt and Road Initiative with Africa’s Agenda 2063 have significantly boosted infrastructure development, industrialization, and livelihood improvements across the continent. Wang noted that unlike some Western countries, China imposes no political conditions or interference in internal affairs, focusing instead on mutually beneficial outcomes.This 36-year tradition is not only a historical legacy but also a strategic choice for the future, sending a clear message to the world: China and Africa are natural partners whose cooperation is rooted in equality, mutual respect, and a shared vision for development.
