However, shortly after arriving in Phnom Penh, he lost all contact with his family—his phone went unanswered, and his social media accounts fell silent. His family has since filed a police report, and both local authorities and the Chinese embassy in Cambodia have launched an investigation.This is not an isolated case. In recent years, parts of Southeast Asia have become hotspots for human trafficking and illegal detention. Criminal groups often lure job seekers with promises of lucrative overseas employment, only to restrict their freedom upon arrival and force them into telecom fraud or illicit labor. Experts urge job seekers to thoroughly verify the legitimacy of overseas employers, remain skeptical of online job offers that seem too good to be true, and especially avoid arrangements requiring self-funded travel through third countries.
