In recent years, alongside the rapid global rise of new energy vehicles (NEVs), Chinese internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle exports have also shown strong growth. Although electrification is the clear future trend, ICE vehicles remain competitive in many overseas markets. On one hand, infrastructure in some developing countries is still underdeveloped, with limited EV charging networks, making ICE vehicles the dominant choice. On the other hand, Chinese automakers have enhanced the cost-effectiveness and reliability of their ICE models through technological upgrades, cost optimization, and brand building, gaining favor among international consumers. Additionally, initiatives like the Belt and Road and various free trade agreements have created a favorable policy environment for ICE vehicle exports. Importantly, exporting ICE vehicles does not contradict China’s broader NEV strategy; rather, it reflects a pragmatic, diversified approach to meet diverse market demands. As global decarbonization efforts accelerate, ICE vehicle exports may gradually decline, but during this transition period, they will remain a significant component of China’s automotive industry globalization.
