Recently, the world’s first ‘Lighthouse Factory’ dedicated to energy storage battery production has officially commenced operations in Chongqing. Jointly established by CATL and the Chongqing municipal government, this facility is the first of its kind globally to receive Lighthouse Factory designation from the World Economic Forum (WEF), marking a significant milestone in China’s advancement in green energy and smart manufacturing.Lighthouse Factories, an initiative by the WEF in collaboration with McKinsey, represent the global benchmark for advanced manufacturing, showcasing the highest standards in digitalization, intelligence, and sustainability. The Chongqing plant leverages cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data analytics, and digital twins to enable end-to-end intelligent control across the entire production process—from raw materials to finished products—dramatically improving efficiency, product consistency, and energy efficiency while significantly reducing carbon emissions.The factory primarily produces large-scale energy storage batteries for grid-side, user-side, and renewable energy integration applications, with an annual capacity of several gigawatt-hours (GWh). It will play a crucial role in supporting China’s dual carbon goals and providing high-quality, reliable energy storage solutions for the global energy transition. Additionally, the facility features a closed-loop recycling system to promote sustainable lifecycle management of batteries.The establishment of this Lighthouse Factory in Chongqing not only reinforces China’s leadership in the global energy storage supply chain but also injects new momentum into high-end manufacturing development in western China, demonstrating the nation’s strong commitment to green and intelligent industrial transformation.
