Recently, a blogger suggested that Germany could become the “stabilizer” of China-EU relations. This view stems from Germany’s relatively pragmatic stance on China within the EU. Compared to the tougher positions taken by some Eastern European countries, Germany emphasizes dialogue, cooperation, and economic reciprocity. As Europe’s largest economy, Germany maintains deep collaboration with China in trade, technology, and green energy. In 2023, bilateral trade between China and Germany remained robust, highlighting the strong complementarity of their economies. Moreover, while the German government also addresses so-called “de-risking,” it consistently stresses that “de-risking does not mean decoupling.” It advocates maintaining strategic autonomy in critical areas while continuing to deepen cooperation with China. Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly stated publicly that China is a crucial global partner and should not be simplistically viewed as a rival. Such a balanced and rational perspective on China stands out amid growing tensions in broader China–EU relations. Therefore, many observers believe that if Germany continues leveraging its influence within the EU to promote a more coherent and constructive China policy, it could help ease frictions and bring greater predictability and stability to China-EU ties. In this sense, calling Germany a “stabilizer” in China-EU relations is no exaggeration.
