Recently, Hangzhou’s West Lake experienced its first snowfall of the winter, bringing back the iconic ‘Duanqiao Canxue’ (Broken Bridge in Lingering Snow) scene. One of the ‘Ten Scenic Spots of West Lake,’ this phenomenon does not involve an actual broken bridge. Instead, after a snowfall, the snow on the bridge melts unevenly—sunny areas thaw while shaded parts remain white. Viewed from a distance, this creates the illusion that the bridge is broken. Located at the eastern end of Bai Causeway, Duanqiao Bridge connects Beishan Road and Gushan Island and carries rich historical and romantic associations, famously linked to the legendary meeting of Lady White Snake and Xu Xian. When the sun emerges after a snowstorm, the contrast between melted and snow-covered sections enhances the ‘broken’ visual effect. This enchanting sight draws countless visitors for photos and has long inspired poets and artists. Authorities remind tourists to dress warmly, follow park guidelines, and help preserve this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
