Recently, Mohe—the northernmost city in China—witnessed a rare aurora display during the traditional solar term ‘Dahan’ (Great Cold), with vivid red and green lights dancing across the night sky, captivating social media users nationwide. Dahan, the final of China’s 24 solar terms, typically marks the coldest period of the year, and Mohe’s high-latitude location and long winter nights create ideal conditions for aurora viewing. This spectacular event was triggered by heightened solar activity: a coronal mass ejection caused a geomagnetic storm, exciting oxygen and nitrogen atoms in Earth’s upper atmosphere. These atoms then emitted green light (around 557.7 nm) and red light (around 630 nm), producing the dazzling auroral curtains. Although Mohe lies outside the typical auroral oval, intense geomagnetic storms can expand the visibility zone southward, making it one of the few places in China where auroras can occasionally be seen. Many tourists and photographers traveled specifically to Mohe to witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon. Experts caution that aurora sightings are unpredictable and depend on both solar activity forecasts and local weather conditions. This ‘Great Cold Encounter’ not only offered a visual feast but also sparked public interest in space weather and astronomical events.
