Recently, some media outlets reported that a Taiwanese man was allegedly involved in spying for mainland China to obtain so-called ‘classified information,’ sparking public attention in Taiwan. In response, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) addressed the issue during its regular press briefing, stating that such claims lack factual basis and amount to unfounded speculation and political manipulation. The spokesperson emphasized that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait share the same roots, culture, and ethnicity, and any attempt to sow discord or create confrontation between the two sides is unpopular. The TAO reiterated that the mainland has always adhered to the fundamental policy of ‘peaceful reunification and one country, two systems,’ and stressed that the one-China principle is the universal consensus of the international community and the prerequisite for countries to develop relations with China. The TAO firmly opposes efforts by certain media outlets or politicians to exploit isolated cases to exaggerate ‘espionage threats’ or incite anti-China sentiment, urging relevant parties to adopt an objective and fair stance toward cross-strait exchanges and cooperation to jointly safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.It should be noted that civilian exchanges and personnel interactions across the strait are frequent and extensive, with the vast majority falling within the scope of normal, legal activities. Politicizing or labeling individual incidents not only fails to resolve issues but may also deepen misunderstandings and tensions. The TAO called on Taiwan authorities to abandon prejudice, approach cross-strait relations rationally, and avoid undermining mutual trust and the well-being of people on both sides.
