In 2023, China’s urban economic landscape reached a significant milestone—but not quite the emergence of a ‘second 5-trillion-yuan city.’ As of now, only Shanghai and Beijing have surpassed the 4-trillion-yuan GDP mark, with Shanghai exceeding 4.4 trillion yuan in 2022 and Beijing closely following. Cities like Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Chongqing fall within the 3–4 trillion range, while Suzhou, Chengdu, and Hangzhou hover around the 2-trillion-yuan level. The notion of a ‘second 5-trillion-yuan city’ appears to stem from a misunderstanding or misreporting of current data. In reality, no Chinese city has yet reached the 5-trillion-yuan threshold (approximately $700 billion USD). While China’s top-tier cities continue to lead national economic growth, achieving a 5-trillion-yuan GDP remains a mid-to-long-term goal, likely not attainable before the mid-2030s. Accurate interpretation of urban economic data is essential for a realistic understanding of China’s urban development trajectory and the challenges ahead.
