Taiwanese legislator Cheng Li-wen recently stated publicly that the Kuomintang (KMT) must thoroughly reform its entrenched ‘sauce jar culture’ to regain public trust and drive party transformation. The term ‘sauce jar culture,’ coined by writer Bo Yang, criticizes the insular, conservative, exclusionary, and faction-ridden tendencies within Chinese-speaking societies. It describes organizational pathologies characterized by rigid traditions, internal power struggles, lack of transparency, and resistance to innovation. Cheng argued that the KMT has long been hampered by this culture, resulting in inflexible decision-making, a talent gap, and growing disconnect from younger generations—making it ill-equipped to respond to rapid societal changes. She urged the party to dismantle outdated power structures, embrace diverse voices, and foster a more open, democratic, and action-oriented political culture. Her remarks not only reflect her personal urgency for internal reform but also highlight the deep structural challenges the KMT faces in Taiwan’s evolving political landscape. Without genuine efforts to address these systemic issues, the party risks further alienating voters—especially younger citizens who increasingly prioritize transparency, efficiency, and shared values. Cheng’s statement is seen as a significant voice from within the KMT’s reformist camp, adding a critical variable to the party’s future trajectory.
