印度尼帕患者疑误饮蝙蝠污染饮料

Recently, a suspected case of Nipah virus infection has been reported in Kerala, southern India, raising public concern. According to local health authorities, the patient had consumed ‘Toddy’—a locally fermented palm sap beverage—shortly before falling ill. The container used to collect this drink may have been contaminated by fruit bats carrying the virus. Nipah virus is a zoonotic pathogen whose natural reservoir is fruit bats (also known as flying foxes). It can spread to humans through direct contact with infected animals’ secretions or by consuming contaminated food, such as raw date palm sap or fruits. In this incident, experts suspect that bats licked the palm sap at night and left virus-laden excretions in the collection vessel, thereby contaminating the beverage. The patient exhibited classic symptoms including high fever, headache, and altered mental status, and is now under isolation treatment. With a fatality rate ranging from 40% to 75%, there is currently no specific antiviral treatment or vaccine for Nipah virus; prevention hinges on interrupting transmission routes and early detection. Indian authorities have activated an emergency response, tracing close contacts and urging the public to avoid consuming untreated, wild-harvested beverages to reduce infection risk.
