In contrast, my mom’s generation came of age with handwritten letters, cash transactions, and face-to-face conversations. To her, a phone is primarily for calling, WeChat is just “a phone that can send voice messages,” and online shopping feels risky and untrustworthy.This generational gap goes beyond mere tool usage—it reflects deeper differences in mindset. I rely on data and algorithms to make decisions, such as choosing restaurants by ratings or using GPS navigation. My mom, however, trusts experience and intuition, preferring recommendations from friends or what she can see with her own eyes. When I try to teach her how to use health codes or link a bank card, she worries that one wrong tap might “lose all her money” or “leak her personal information.”Yet this divide has taught me that technological progress shouldn’t come at the cost of empathy and understanding. I’ve learned to slow down and explain the digital world in terms she can grasp, while she bravely tries new things—even if it’s just mastering how to take a clear photo with her phone. Though our digital gap may never fully close, every patient conversation becomes a bridge across generations.
