Recently, China’s first deepwater oilfield redevelopment project—the Liuhua 11-1/4-1 field—has achieved full production, marking a significant breakthrough in efficient deepwater hydrocarbon development and revitalization of mature fields. Located in the eastern South China Sea at a water depth of approximately 300 meters, the project employs an innovative ‘integrated old-and-new infrastructure with phased development’ approach, seamlessly combining existing decommissioned platforms with newly installed subsea production systems to maximize resource utilization. Upon full operation, the project is expected to reach a peak annual output of 800,000 metric tons of crude oil, substantially enhancing regional energy supply capacity. The project has also overcome key technical challenges, including deepwater subsea wellhead installation, intelligent water injection, and remote control systems, establishing a replicable and scalable technical and engineering model for future redevelopment of aging deepwater fields in China. This milestone not only strengthens national energy security but also underscores China’s commitment to advancing its offshore oil industry toward deeper waters, greater sustainability, and smarter operations.
