In response, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of National Defense emphasized that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China, and any attempt by external forces to interfere in China’s internal affairs or obstruct its reunification is doomed to fail. The spokesperson reaffirmed that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army possesses the firm resolve, full confidence, and sufficient capability to thwart any form of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist schemes and external interference. China urged the United States to abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, cease all forms of official exchanges and military ties with Taiwan, and handle Taiwan-related issues prudently to avoid further damaging China-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The Ministry also noted that peaceful reunification best serves the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation, including Taiwan compatriots, but China will never promise to renounce the use of force—a necessary measure directed solely against external interference and the separatist activities of a very small number of ‘Taiwan independence’ elements.
