In recent years, driven by the surging global demand for new energy and energy storage technologies, sodium-ion batteries have emerged as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries due to their abundant raw materials, low cost, and high safety. Against this backdrop, numerous Chinese-listed companies are accelerating their strategic moves across the sodium battery value chain—including cathode/anode materials, electrolytes, cell manufacturing, and system integration. For instance, CATL has unveiled its first-generation sodium-ion battery and plans mass production in 2023; companies like Transcendence Tech, Veken Technology, and PHE Group have also announced pilot production lines or product sampling for testing. On the policy front, China’s ’14th Five-Year Plan for New Energy Storage Development’ explicitly supports R&D and demonstration projects for sodium-ion batteries, further catalyzing industrial adoption. Sodium batteries hold significant cost advantages in applications such as low-speed electric vehicles, e-bikes, and grid-scale energy storage, making them prime candidates for early commercialization. Although their energy density currently lags behind that of lithium-ion batteries, ongoing improvements in materials and manufacturing processes are rapidly advancing sodium battery commercialization, positioning it as a key strategic focus for listed companies aiming to lead next-generation battery technology.
