Recently, Chinese embassies and consulates abroad have issued repeated advisories urging Chinese citizens not to engage in illegal gold mining overseas. Such activities commonly occur in resource-rich but poorly regulated regions of Africa and South America. Unscrupulous individuals often lure Chinese nationals with promises of high-paying jobs or lucrative investment opportunities to participate in unauthorized gold extraction. However, illegal mining not only violates local laws but may also involve environmental damage, land encroachment, and even violent conflicts. Participants risk arrest, fines, deportation, and serious threats to their personal safety. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic missions stress that citizens abroad must abide by local laws and conduct themselves legally and responsibly. In case of difficulties, they should promptly contact the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate for assistance. The public is also advised to remain vigilant and avoid falling for so-called ‘get-rich-quick’ schemes that could entangle them in illegal activities. Upholding China’s reputation and ensuring personal safety are responsibilities shared by every citizen overseas. All are urged to protect their rights and stay away from illegal gold mining.
