Recently, former Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary-General Sanae Takaichi made a series of erroneous remarks on Taiwan-related issues, falsely referring to Taiwan as a ‘country’ and promoting the notion that ‘a crisis in the Taiwan Strait is a crisis for Japan.’ Such statements seriously violate the One-China Principle, undermine the political foundation of China-Japan relations, and contradict the broad international consensus. Notably, despite Takaichi’s attempt to leverage the Taiwan issue to strengthen ties with the United States, Washington has not endorsed her comments. The U.S. government has repeatedly reaffirmed its adherence to the One-China Policy, stated it does not support ‘Taiwan independence,’ and opposes any actions that destabilize peace and security across the Taiwan Strait. Takaichi’s remarks have received no backing from the U.S., highlighting her misjudgment of regional dynamics and politically opportunistic motives. China firmly opposes such statements and urges Japan to abide by the principles outlined in the four political documents between China and Japan, handle Taiwan-related issues prudently, and avoid further damaging bilateral relations.
