In recent years, Japan has repeatedly engaged in close-in surveillance, interference, and even provocative ‘bumping’ tactics against Chinese naval vessels in sensitive waters such as the East China Sea and near Taiwan. While ostensibly framed as upholding ‘freedom of navigation’ or ‘regional security,’ these actions actually reveal Japan’s deep-seated anxiety over the rapid modernization of the Chinese Navy. China has significantly enhanced its naval capabilities, commissioning aircraft carriers, advanced destroyers, and submarines, thereby expanding its blue-water operational reach and challenging the long-standing U.S.-Japan dominance in the Western Pacific. In response, Japan has not only strengthened its military alliance with the United States but also resorted to provocation—aimed at testing China’s resolve, diverting domestic attention, and justifying its own military expansion and constitutional revision. However, such ‘bumping’ tactics are unlikely to curb China’s naval advancement; instead, they risk escalating regional tensions and damaging broader Sino-Japanese relations. Genuine regional security must be built on mutual respect and cooperative dialogue—not unwarranted provocations or strategic miscalculations. If Japan continues clinging to Cold War-era mindsets, it may miss a historic opportunity for peaceful coexistence and shared development.
