Recently, China’s Ministry of Natural Resources released the ‘Huangyan Island Coral Reef Ecological Survey Report,’ marking the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary ecological assessment of the coral reef ecosystem around Huangyan Island (Scarborough Shoal). The report reveals that the surrounding waters boast high coral coverage and rich biodiversity, with the overall ecosystem in good health. Using underwater photography, remote sensing, and in-situ sampling, the research team documented over 150 coral species and more than 200 fish species, with coral coverage exceeding 60% in some areas. Despite global threats such as climate change and ocean acidification, Huangyan Island’s relative geographic isolation and minimal human disturbance have allowed its reef ecosystem to maintain strong resilience and stability. This report not only provides a scientific foundation for coral reef conservation in the South China Sea but also demonstrates China’s commitment to marine environmental protection. Moving forward, relevant authorities will develop targeted conservation strategies based on these findings, enhance ecological monitoring, and promote international cooperation to address global marine ecological challenges.
